Dr. Ngozi N. Nwizu is an associate professor in the Department of Diagnostic and Biomedical Sciences at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) School of Dentistry. She obtained her dental degree from the University of Lagos in Nigeria, and a Master of Medical Science degree in oral pathology from the University of Glasgow, Scotland, U.K., where she was a recipient of a prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship.
Dr. Nwizu completed her residency in oral and maxillofacial pathology and received specialty certification from the State University of New York at Buffalo, N.Y. As a postgraduate resident, she was awarded the William M. Feagans Clinical Postgraduate Scholarship. Subsequently, Dr. Nwizu earned a doctorate in pathology (Cancer Epidemiology Track) from the State University of New York at Buffalo (Roswell Park Cancer Institute Graduate Division).
Her research is focused on the association between periodontal disease and risk of overall cancer, as well as many site-specific cancers; and exploring the role of chronic inflammation as a plausible mechanistic link. Her current research interests are in periodontal disease, oral microbiome and cancer risk. She is also interested in improved treatment modalities for head and neck cancers, and novel approaches to reduce cancer- and treatment-related morbidities
Dr. Nwizu is a board-certified diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, and she is a fellow of the American Academy of Oral Medicine.
