Biography

Dr. Antonio D. Cardenas is a clinical professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at UTHealth School of Dentistry. He is a consultant to, past president and founding member of the Colombian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

Dr. Cardenas is professor emeritus at Corporación de Estudios para la Salud (CES) in Medellin, Colombia, where he taught for more than 25 years.  He founded the first postgraduate program in pediatric dentistry in Colombia. He was head of postgraduate studies at CES from 1982 to 1994. In addition to his involvement in academics, Dr. Cardenas was also in private practice for more than 30 years.

He has been a guest lecturer in Colombia and several other Latin American countries, including Panama, Ecuador, Venezuela, Mexico and Peru. Dr. Cardenas authored the textbook, "Fundamentos de Odontologia Pediatrica” (Fundamentals of Pediatric Dentistry), which is now in its fifth edition and is widely used by several dental schools in Colombia and South America. He is also co-author of two textbooks, namely, “Early Orthodontic Treatment” with Dr. Gonzalo A. Uribe and “Dental Emergencies” with Dr. Jose N. Rad, which is now in its second edition. 

Dr. Cardenas currently practices a half-day a week at the faculty group practice, UT Dentists, inside UTHealth School of Dentistry at Houston.
