Dr. Cristiane Sá Roriz Fonteles is a professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry. Dr Fonteles has a MS and PhD in pharmacology, and is dual-trained in general dentistry and pediatric dentistry. With extensive clinical and research training, she has focused much of her career on providing dental care for children with special needs and craniofacial anomalies. She has been the recipient of the Basil G. Bibby Fellowship at the Eastman Dental Center, University of Rochester (1998-1999), and the Fulbright Scholarship from the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (2009). In addition, her knowledge in Genetics and Birth Defects (2015-2016, 2022-2023) were greatly enhanced while working with the Finnell Birth Defect Lab as a postdoc at UT Austin, and later at the Finnell/Cabrera Birth Defect group at the Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Fonteles leads innovative research in areas such as clinical genetics and the use of saliva for diagnosing and monitoring diseases and craniofacial syndromes. She is also the principal investigator of a cohort study on the craniofacial and oral characteristics of children born with congenital Zika syndrome. Dr Fonteles has authored over 60 scientific publications and has played a key role in advancing both clinical and translational research in her field.
